2006 American Music Awards Recap (long post!)

Files under Music, fun | Posted by Clint Lenard

Here’s a recap from the 2006 AMA’s for those that might have missed it.

Jimmy Kimmel started the show off great with some hilarious jokes about Snoop, etc… that was funny until he hit “K-FED” HHAAAARRDDD haha… wow, they tore up Kevin Federline (sp?) pretty bad and when they were done guess who walked out?

Yep, Britney Spears - his ex-wife. I thought that was a pretty funny start, although I can’t stand that chick or any other pop star like her. Cheesy fame erks me.

I’m a Thigh guy so seeing Beyonce was great but I was blown away when Carrie Underwood stood up in her performance… talk about HOT! Those legs have to be the most amazing I’ve seen in a LOOONG time. Wow, she’s been working on those beauties… great performance as well!

The Pussycat Dolls performed… I thought it was the most un-needed performance of the night. I think most of them are hot but dancing on stage creates poor Vocals and that’s something they’re not known for (good vocals, that is) and then they had that one chick come out to save them with her “great voice” but blew it because well… it sounded like Sh!t, honestly. The lead singer is fine but that was one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen…

Josh Groban performed and did well… there’s two types of people when it comes to this guy - you either love the guys music or you’ve never heard him before. Bottom line…

The Black Eye Peas were nominated for “Favorite Rap Group or Duo” and WON! HAHA! that tells you how good Hip Hop is these days… and the appreciation for it. Sorry Black Eye Peas fans but they’re wack! It’s pretty sad that they beat out Three Six Mafia, though.

Nelly Furtado performed her newest Single but again, not a good performance in my opinion. I guess I’m looking for LIVE PERFORMANCES that don’t suck on the American MUSIC AWARDS, you know? I like Nelly Furtado but c’mon - what’s up with all these performances using Overdubs and adlibs during their performances to cover up the real artists vocals? Lame! Timberland is a great producer but I don’t see the need for his little sound effects to be on EVERY BAR of every beat he creates now. The song was cool, though. Sounded like it was from the late 80’s or something.

What’s up with all the WIND? There was some kind of Windy Theme going on with every chick performer tonight… not sure why.

Billy Ray Cyrus and his daughter Miley (of Hannah Montana fame) introduced Rascal Flatts as the best Country Band/Duo and cracked jokes about Master P and Romeo - funny stuff, too.

Snow Patrol (been a fan for years!) performed their single “Chasing Cars” and did great… alot better than most of the artists before them. Actually, Beyonce, Josh Groban and Carrie Underwood were the only good performers up until them. So, they were only the third performance worth watching up until that point.

Ryan Seacrest (yeah, your favorite guy in the world) introduced Gwen Stefani for her newest single which started out cool with some funky yodeling but got annoying real quick. Look, we all got the banana song stuck in our heads and then that fergy chick tried to copy it but now that crap is REAL ANNOYING. It sucks that she sold out that bad… Basically, the performance wasn’t THAT bad but the song in general was just terrible. God, why has music sucked so bad lately? Oh yeah, refer to half the songs performed tonight…

Jay-Z performed right after and well… It’s Jay-Z! You can hate him all you want but he’s a monster. He makes great Music. Period. *takes a few moments to sing “show me whatcha got lil mama, show me whatcha got pretty lady, show me whatcha got shawtyyyyy … hands up and waaave, waaave, waaave”* hehe, let’s continue. At least Hip Hop has a good emcee coming back to save it from the garbage out there!
Chingy and Gavin Rossdale (what a combo, huh? wtf? Bush mixed with a bad knockoff of Nelly?) handed out an award to Red Hot Chili Peppers who put on a weird little thank you from London.

Jimmy Kimmel came out on stage with an “adopted baby” in a carriage who he pulled up and it was Flavor Flav … definitely funny stuff.

Sean Paul won best Male Pop Award and beat out Nick Lachey and Kanye West (was waiting for him to run up on stage and make an ass out of himself…then claim he wasn’t). Sean Paul thanked everybody with his fake accent… very entertaining.

WHY in the hell did Paris Hilton and Tony Hawk get invited to these Awards to introduce anyone? Okay, I can see Tony Hawk because he didn’t record a joke of an Album and he’s very popular. But god…the other is a joke!
Jamie Foxx won best Male Soul/R&B singer. Why not? he’s gotta be the hardest working man in the Entertainment Industry.

Christian Slater and Sharon Stone (hello Nipples … “look at me I’m an attention whore!”) introduced The Dixie Chicks who performed “Easy Silence” and as I figured - nailed it. Anybody that can speak out against the hidden Bush Agendas and sing good is my kinda person(s)! One of the best performances of the night.

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, duh) came out to introduce Tenacious D haha… definitely the Highlight of the night, in my opinion! :)

Tenacious D performed their new hit single “The Pick of Destiny”…the song rocks! Did any of these artists think they’d out perform Jack Black? c’mon, be real!

Mary J. Blige performed immediately after Tenacious D and as much as I like her and her music — it just seemed out of place after the last 2 performances. They should have cut to a commercial or gave out an award or something before she performed… it just took a while to get into the song after hearing everything before her. In the end - I got into the song and liked it, so there.

Brian McKnight and Keisha Cole gave out the award for “Contemporary Inspirational Artists”. Aly and AJ (Michalka for those who don’t know), Casting Crowns and Kirk Franklin were up for it - but in the end, Kirk Franklin won his very first AMA. I could’ve swore Brian McKnight was going to accidentally step on him while he was walking off stage…

Vanessa Williams had a flashback moment and then Nicole Richie introduced her father Lionel Richie (I kid you NOT.) onto the stage to perform after a 20 year hiatus. At first I thought “WTF? Why? Your daughters popular so now you wanna step back in the spotlight?” but the song was actually a good song… it made me think about my childhood because he was like the MOST popular Artist at that time (mid 80’s). I actually thought his return was a great addition. He also performed “All Night Long” which got the crowd up on its feet. Very cool performance! It was interesting seeing nearly EVERYBODY they showed singing the lyrics to that song, even the teenagers haha!

Kirk Franklin and Taylor Hicks gave the award for something to The Black Eyed Peas … who cares! I had a more interesting time wondering why Paris Hilton was at the awards for.

Babyface (been a long time since I’ve seen him on anything) introduced Fallout Boy, whom apparently worked with Babyface in the Studio (what he said!). Of course Fallout Boy kicked ass…although the Levels SUCKED. The sound engineer should kick his own ass for that. It sounded like I was sitting in the back row half of the time. They performed their newest single which I BELIEVE is called “Sing, until your lungs give out” but I might be wrong.

Nickelback gave out the award for “Breakthrough Artist” which included Chamillionaire, The Pussycat Dolls and Carrie Underwood. Wow… who to choose? Carrie Underwood, of course! She’s got the nicest legs… didn’t you know that? Seriously though - I figured Chamillionaire would win… Pussycat Dolls are not good Musicians so I wouldn’t expect them but the Black Eyed Peas did win awards… yuck.

Rascal Flatts performed “Life is a highway” which was their hit single from “Cars” Soundtrack. Actually, that song is what really impressed me with that group in the first place. I liked a few of their songs before but they made a good song better, in my opinion. They kicked ass with their live performance, who would’ve thunk it? ;)  P.S. Cars is an awesome Movie so if you haven’t watched it by now - you suck and you shouldn’t be reading this… go buy that movie, seriously.

Jamie Foxx performed immediately after Rascal Flatts and he dedicated his song to all kinds of people - one of which was Gerald Levert whom I didn’t know passed away… that sucks. I try to stay away from Mainstream news anymore but I’m not sure how I missed that? Didn’t his daughter just appear on that MTV show Sweet 16 with him? Wow, that kind of ruined the performance for me as I spent a few minutes searching on how he died. Anyways, I actually got into the song Jamie Foxx performed. It was really “gospelly” and “soulish” but for the most part it was good!

Just found out that Gerald Levert passed away on November 10th, 2006 of an apparent Heart Attack (in his sleep, atleast he died peacefully) for those who didn’t know.

Ashley Simpson (with her new funky nose makeover) and Jesse McCartney gave out the award for Best Artist of 2006 which went to Rascal Flatts who I voted for on ABC.com during the show. They deserved it more than anyone else on the list, in my opinion.
Carmen Electra introduced Barry Manilow…. I’m sorry but I started falling asleep as soon as they took the camera off of the hot chick (Carmen Electra). zZzZzZzZZzz. I’m not a Barry Manilow fan at all… plus he butchered a few great classic oldies, as usual. Next…………….

Linkin Park gave out the award for “Favorite Alternative Artist” which went to Red Hot Chili Peppers…w00t!

Jenna Elfman and Meatloaf introduced the “Favorite Rap Album” award haha. Black Eyed Peas won… wow. Pathetic. THEY ARE NOT HIP HOP! They’re (as they say in hip hop) GARBAGE!

Tori Spelling and Clay Aiken introduced John Mayer but Tori Spelling covered his mouth and said “I’ll tell you where that hands been later” referring to the newly found beef between Kelly Ripa and Clay Aiken. John Mayer performed “waiting on the world to change” which is one of my favorite joints right now. He performed it flawlessly from what I seen/heard as it sounded just like it does on the album… the video for that song is good by the way, check it out.

Chamillionaire and Weird Al Yankovich came out on stage (Ridin’ Dirty and Ridin’ Nerdy haha) to talk about Soundscan… for some unknown reason.

Yeeeahhhhh… that one was kind of odd since they were talking about something and it just seemed to stop all the sudden? No clue what happened there.

The Game and Chris Brown came out to introduce Snoop Dogg and Akon which is probably the best Snoop Dogg joint I’ve heard in a LONG time, to be honest. I’m not sure what the whole Stripper thing is with Akon though… not that I have a problem with Strippers or anything but every song I’ve seen him perform has strippers on them…just odd I guess? Good performance in my opinion…
Frankie J and Tyrese came out to give out the award for “Best Female Soul/R&B Artist” which went to Mary J. Blige, again… well deserved!

Jimmy Kimmel ended the show and that was that… not the best Awards show I’ve seen but the best I’ve seen in a while. Good stuff.

Wow, that was the longest post I’ve ever made. Gzzzzzzzzzz….
